Clear Channel Airports (CCA) is the industry leader of airport advertising and the premier innovator of contemporary display concepts. CCA partnered with Meridian to create a turn-key system for interactive digital signage at airports. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), US Airports fall under a special zone for ADA compliance, including physical reach/height regulations and accessibility to the deaf and the visually impaired.
To address the physical requirements, Meridian assessed the hardware and positioned screen content within reach of the compliance guidelines. Content that is out of reach of the user may be moved down into the compliance area using buttons near the bottom of the screen.
To address accessibility for the visually impaired, Meridian utilized the Mzero ADA accessibility features to present the screen content in Interactive Voice Response, a technology that allows the kiosk software to interact with users through use of voice prompts and Dual Tone Multiple Frequencies (DTMF) tones.
ADA accessibility for the deaf requires the kiosk to provide a Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD or TTY) service. Typically, a TDD device is a physical hardware component that must be installed on the kiosk and attached to a physical analog landline. Mzero provided an all-software solution, eliminating the need for additional TDD equipment.
In addition to accessibility features, Mzero provided CCA multi-language support for displaying content in ten languages including English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Arabic.
Meridian developed a foundation to create interactive experiences with digital signage that are measurable, manageable and accessible. The ADA compliant kiosks are installed in airports across the US and Canada, allowing CCA to sell advertisements to local amenities such as hotels, transportation, entertainment and restaurants.
